The only thing I've ever been passionate about it music, but this year has been absolutely awful for small indie rock bands coming to Boston. Is it the economy? Are bands just not traveling as much? I have forked over more money to larger venues like the House of Blues and the Wilbur Theater for comedians and larger acts that I normally would due to high ticket prices, but New England's dreary weather and lull of anything going on has driven me to stoop to a new low.
With anything else in life lows can lead to new highs. Highs that I have written about before, but could never fully illustrate. People from back home ask me all the time what I have been up to, and I tell them that I go out and see DJ's. Some friends, some locals, and some foreign. I can't even explain to them what the scene in Boston is like, what is looks like, what it feels like, what it sounds like. I try in my own ways, but to explain the experience is like speaking Japanese to people who just don't care to listen. I am not a music journalist, or a writer, or even a nightlife photographer. I am a techno music fan.
Speaking in Code is a documentary shot over the past 3 years about a couple from Boston who beautifully capture the high and lows of being incredibly passionate about techno music. From debt, to a slowly deteriorating relationship you get see Amy Grill and David Day travel around the world from festivals to small towns interviewing DJ's, journalists, record label owners, about what they do and their involvement in the techno scene. You also get a perfectly painted picture of what the scene is like in Boston, and the creators.
My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to catch a screening of the movie at the Paradise, with the director herself and Moderat (members of Modeselektor and Apparat). Moderat played after the movie and totally killed it. Paradise (a predominately rock venue) never looked as epic as it did when Moderat played. They had 3 massive screens exploding with images that flowed over as a tripdic. The set started off very minimal and slowly got heavier, and eventually exploded. So for those who seek something new, for those who experience passion, for those who's hearts combust on the dance floor I urge you to go see Speaking in Code when it comes to your city.
